Signs and Symptoms

Go to an emergency facility immediately if you have:

1. Sudden, high fever (higher than 102 degrees).

2. Headache, dizziness, or confusion.

3. Weakness or fainting.

4. Watery diarrhea.

5. Vomiting.

6. A rash often on the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet.

What to do now

1. If you have symptoms and you have a tampon, a contraceptive sponge or menstrual sponge, or a diaphragm, or a cervical cap inside you, remove it immediately.

When to call a doctor

1. If you have symptoms of toxic shock syndrome-especially if you are menstruating and have been using tamp ointment:

How to prevent it

1. If you use a diaphragm or cervical cap, remember to remove it within the time recommended in the directions. Never leave a diaphragm in for more than 24 hours. or a cervical cap in for more than 48 hours.

2. Wash your hands thoroughly before you insert a tampon or any other device.

3. Minimize your use of tampons. If you don’t want to stop using them, wear tampons made of cotton, which pose the least risk, and alternate tampons with sanitary pads. If you’ve ever had toxic shock syndrome, avoid using tampons altogether.

4. Don’t use super-absorbent tampons. Use the least absorbent tampon that will control your menstrual flow.

5. Change tampons frequently during the day- at least every four to six hours.

6. Avoid using tampons or menstrual sponges overnight.

7. Always clean and disinfect cuts or scrapes anywhere on your body. If a wound appears to be infected, get medical help.
